When the “Seal” Is Broken
Whether it happened while eating something soft or during a sudden impact, a broken tooth, filling, or crown is a structural emergency. Your teeth are engineered to handle immense pressure, but once a fracture begins or a restoration fails, the internal environment of the tooth is exposed to the world.
This exposure creates a race against the clock. Without the protective shield of enamel or a sealed filling, bacteria can migrate into the microscopic tubules of your dentin within hours. This leads to three specific structural crises:
- The “Chip” vs. The “Crack”: A chip is often cosmetic, but a crack can behave like a windshield fracture, spreading deep into the root under the pressure of chewing.
- Exposed Pulp: If the break reaches the center of the tooth, the nerve is now “live” and exposed to air, sugar, and bacteria, leading to excruciating throb.
- The Failed Foundation: When a crown or filling falls out, it often reveals “secondary decay” that has been hollowed out the tooth from the inside.
At DayOne, we don’t just “patch” the break. We use 3D technology to determine if the tooth is still viable or if a rescue is needed.
The 3D Truth: Beyond the Chip
Standard 2D X-rays cannot see fractures that run “vertically” or “obliquely” through the tooth. They often make a broken tooth look “salvageable” when, in reality, the root has already split. This leads to patients spending money on crowns that fail soon after treatment.
Our High-Definition 3D CBCT imaging eliminates the guesswork. We provide the “3D Truth” by visualizing:
- Fracture Depth: We see exactly how far a crack extends toward the jawbone.
- Internal Integrity: We assess the thickness of the remaining tooth walls to ensure a filling or crown will actually hold.
- Root Assessment: We verify the root is healthy before you invest in saving the tooth.
“Chipped tooth? Check if it is cracked in 3D. You choose the path. Treatment available today.”
25+ Years of Structural Mastery
Broken teeth are often complex. They require a clinician who understands the mechanics of force and the biology of the nerve. Dr. Bergquist brings over 25 years of dental and surgical expertise to every structural emergency.
DayOne isn’t a “drill and fill” clinic. We are a Surgical Sanctuary. We specialize in “Broken Tooth Rescue.” Whether it’s an emergency build-up to save a front tooth or a complex surgical extraction of a split root, Dr. Bergquist performs the treatment on-site, usually during the same visit.
We believe that the best dentistry is the most transparent. We show you the 3D scans, we explain the structural limits of the tooth, and we let you decide based on facts.
Case Study: Save or Replace?
The Broken Crown Crisis
A patient came to us after their crown popped off over the weekend. They were told by another office that the tooth was “fine” and just needed to be glued back on. But the patient felt a sharp “twinge” whenever they touched it.
The 3D Rescue: Our 3D scan revealed that the tooth had developed a vertical split beneath the gum line—something a 2D X-ray could never see. Recementing the crown would have led to a massive infection within weeks. Because we saw the “3D Truth,” the patient was able to opt for an immediate extraction and site preservation, saving them months of pain and wasted money.
Your Decision. Your Relief.
Once we’ve visualized the internal structure of your broken tooth in 3D, we present two primary paths:
Option A: Save & Reinforce
If the root is intact, we focus on an immediate “Build-up” or emergency root therapy to seal the nerve and prepare the tooth for a new, permanent restoration.
Option B: Strategic Removal
If the tooth has split or is structurally unsound, we perform an atraumatic surgical extraction to remove the source of the pain and prevent future infection.
Broken Tooth FAQ
Can a broken filling wait?
We don’t recommend it. A broken filling leaves the soft “dentin” of your tooth exposed. Once bacteria enter those tubules, they move toward the nerve quickly. Early intervention is the difference between a simple filling and a root canal.
My tooth doesn’t hurt, but it’s chipped. Is it an emergency?
If the edge is sharp, it can damage your tongue or cheek. More importantly, a chip often masks a deeper crack. A quick 3D scan can ensure the structural integrity of the tooth is still sound.
What if my crown fell out?
Do not try to superglue it back. This can trap bacteria and cause a rapid infection. Bring the crown with you; if the tooth underneath is healthy, we may be able to recement it after a thorough 3D evaluation.
