Why Your Gums Are “Bleeding”
If your hands bled every time you washed them, you would rush to the doctor. Yet, many people ignore bleeding gums for years, assuming they are just “brushing too hard.” In reality, bleeding gums are an active, open wound. They are the primary distress signal that your body is losing a battle against an aggressive bacterial invasion.
When plaque and tartar (calculus) are allowed to remain beneath the gum line, they act like a splinter in your finger. Your immune system creates inflammation to “push” the splinter out, but because it is stuck to the tooth, the inflammation becomes chronic. This leads to three specific foundational crises:
- The Bone-Follows-Gum Myth: It’s actually the opposite. Gums recede because the bone beneath them is dissolving. If your gums are bleeding, your bone foundation is likely being “eaten” by bacteria.
- Pocket Accumulation: The “seal” between your gum and tooth has broken, creating deep pockets where toxic bacteria hide and multiply, out of reach of your toothbrush.
- Systemic Entrance: Bleeding gums act as a gateway. These same bacteria can travel through your bloodstream, contributing to heart disease and systemic inflammation.
At DayOne, we don’t just “clean” teeth. We map the bone in 3D to see if your bleeding is a surface scrape or a foundational collapse.
See Bone Levels in 3D
2D X-rays are flat. They can show if bone loss is happening *between* teeth, but they are blind to the bone levels on the *front* and *back* of your roots. This is where most bone loss starts. By the time a 2D X-ray shows the problem, it’s often too late to save the tooth.
We utilize High-Definition 3D CBCT imaging to find the “3D Truth.” Our scans visualize:
- Incipient Bone Loss: We catch the very first signs of jawbone “hollowing” that 2D scans miss.
- Tartar Architecture: We see exactly how deep the tartar “spurs” have traveled down the root, allowing for precision surgical removal.
- “Gum Boil” Sources: We trace the source of localized swelling directly to the bone level.

25+ Years of Foundation Mastery
Treating bleeding gums is about more than hygiene; it is about managing the structural relationship between your teeth and your jaw. Dr. Bergquist brings over 25 years of high-complexity dental and surgical experience to every crisis.
DayOne is a Surgical Sanctuary. We specialize in “Foundational Rescue.” While other offices might schedule a cleaning weeks out, we understand that an active bleeding infection is an emergency. Dr. Bergquist’s expertise in periodontal dynamics allows us to perform same-day debridement and surgical rescue for failing foundations.
We believe in transparency. We show you your 3D bone map, we discuss the pocket depths, and we give you the data to decide how to save your smile. You aren’t just visiting a dentist; you are engaging an expert in foundational preservation.
Case Study: More Than Just Gingivitis
The “Pink Toothbrush” Patient
A patient from Altamonte Springs came in complaining that their toothbrush was always “pink.” They had no pain, just occasional bleeding. They had been told elsewhere it was “just a little gingivitis” and they needed to floss more.
The 3D Rescue: Our 3D scan revealed that while the gums looked okay on the surface, the patient had lost 40% of the bone on the *tongue-side* of their teeth. It wasn’t gingivitis; it was active Periodontitis. We performed an immediate, same-day surgical debridement and Perio Protect treatment. Within a month, the bleeding stopped, and the bone foundation was stabilized.
The Path to Stability
Once we’ve visualized your 3D bone levels, you decide the path forward for your rescue:
Option A: Foundational Debridement
Best for saving teeth. We use high-precision tools to remove the deep tartar and bacterial colonies from beneath the gum line, allowing the seal to reform. The best method to keep the “gum pocket” bacteria free after the cleaning is to use Perio Protect which we will provide.
Option B: Strategic Extraction
If bone loss is too extreme (over 70%), the tooth is acting as a reservoir for infection that threatens the rest of your mouth. We perform an atraumatic removal to protect your remaining teeth.
Bleeding Gums FAQ
Is it normal for gums to bleed a little?
No. Healthy gum tissue does not bleed. Bleeding is the clinical sign of inflammation and tissue breakdown. It is your body’s “alarm bell” that an infection is present.
Can I just use a special mouthwash?
Mouthwash only treats the top 1-2 millimeters of the gum. If the infection is 5-6 millimeters deep in a pocket, the mouthwash will never reach it. You need physical debridement to remove the source.
How does a 3D scan help with bleeding?
It shows us the bone-to-root ratio. This tells us if we are treating a simple gum irritation or if we are fighting to save a tooth that is losing its foundation.
