Why Crowns Fall Off
It usually happens at the worst time—a sudden “crunch” or a loose feeling, and suddenly your crown is in your hand. Your first instinct is to find some “dental glue” at the pharmacy and put it back. But a crown is more than a cap; it is a biological seal. When it fails, it is usually a signal that the environment beneath the porcelain has changed.
A crown rarely fails because of “bad glue.” It fails because of Marginal Leakage. Over years of chewing, microscopic gaps can form at the edge of the crown. Bacteria seep in, creating a “silent” rot that hollows out the tooth nub from the inside. This creates three specific structural crises:
- The “Slippery Nub”: Decay has turned the hard tooth structure into a soft, mushy material that glue simply cannot bond to.
- Internal Micro-Fractures: The tooth beneath the crown has developed a split. Re-gluing the crown would act like putting a lid on a pressure cooker, leading to a massive abscess.
- Pulp Exposure: With the crown gone, the internal nerve is exposed to air and sugar. If not sealed immediately, the nerve will undergo irreversible shock.
At DayOne, we don’t just “guess and glue.” We use 3D structural analysis to see if the tooth is savable or if a rescue is required.
3D Clarity: Beyond the Surface
Traditional 2D X-rays struggle with crowns. They cannot see “through” the metal or porcelain clearly, and they cannot visualize the “ferrule” (the amount of healthy tooth above the gum line). If a dentist re-glues a crown onto a decayed nub, you are guaranteed a root canal or extraction within months.
We utilize High-Definition 3D CBCT imaging to give you the “3D Facts” before we touch your tooth:
- Hidden Decay Detection: We slice through the digital image to find “secondary decay” hiding beneath the gum line.
- Structural Integrity Check: We measure the remaining “nub” to ensure there is enough healthy tooth to support a new restoration.
- Root Health Audit: We verify the root is free of infection before you invest in a new crown.
“Hidden decay under your crown? See it in 3D. You decide. Same-day treatment available.”
25+ Years of Honest, Surgical Mastery
A lost crown is a fork in the road. You need an authority who understands when a tooth is truly savable and when it’s a “lost cause.” Dr. Bergquist brings over 25 years of surgical and restorative experience to every structural emergency in Orlando.
DayOne is a Surgical Sanctuary designed for definitive, high-stakes decisions. Dr. Bergquist doesn’t believe in “patchwork” dentistry. By combining 3D diagnostics with decades of clinical mastery, he can determine the most conservative path to keep your smile intact.
We believe in the “3D Truth.” We show you the scan, we discuss the mechanical limits of your tooth, and we let you decide based on facts. Whether it’s an emergency re-cement, a core build-up, or a surgical rescue, we perform the treatment right here, today.
Case Study: The “Glue It” Mistake
The Patient’s Dilemma
A patient from Maitland lost their crown on a Saturday. They went to a general office that simply “re-cemented” it without a 3D scan. Three weeks later, they were in agonizing pain. The crown had fallen off again, taking half the tooth with it.
The 3D Rescue: They came to Dr. Bergquist. A 3D scan revealed that the tooth had a “silent” vertical split. Re-gluing it had actually forced the crack deeper. Because we saw the “3D Truth,” Dr. Bergquist performed a same-day atraumatic extraction and localized site preservation. The patient’s pain was gone the same day, and they had a clear path to a permanent, solid replacement.
Your Path to Restoration
Once we’ve mapped the structure of your tooth in 3D, we show you the reality. You choose the fix:
Option A: Conservative Re-Cement & Seal
Best if the tooth nub is 100% healthy and the crown still fits. We perform a high-tech decontamination of the nub and re-bond the crown with premium resins.
Option B: Structural Build-up (Core Rescue)
If minor decay is present, we remove the rot and “re-build” the tooth foundation using high-bond ceramic materials, preparing the tooth for a new, permanent crown.
Lost Crown FAQ
Can I use superglue to put my crown back?
NO. Superglue is toxic to the living nerve inside your tooth. Furthermore, it creates an uneven “lift” that can crack the tooth when you bite down. Use temporary dental cement from a pharmacy, and only for 24 hours.
Why is my tooth sensitive now that the crown is gone?
The crown was protecting the sensitive “dentin” and nerve. Now that it’s exposed, air and cold are hitting the nerve directly. Sealing it quickly is the only way to prevent a root canal.
Should I bring my crown with me?
Yes! Even if we can’t re-glue it permanently, having the crown allows us to see how it failed.
