Why It Hurts Only When You Eat
There is nothing more frustrating than a “ghost pain”—a sharp, electric zing that happens the moment you bite down, only to disappear seconds later. It makes you afraid to eat, forcing you to chew on one side of your mouth and leaving you in a constant state of dental anxiety.
This isn’t just a “sensitive tooth.” It is a mechanical failure. When you apply pressure to a compromised tooth, you are often triggering one of three specific emergencies:
- The Wedge Effect: A microscopic fracture in the enamel opens when you bite and “snaps” shut when you release, pinching the nerve inside.
- Periapical Pressure: An infection at the tip of the root has created a pocket of fluid. Biting down is like stepping on a balloon; the pressure has nowhere to go but against your bone.
- Ligament Inflammation: The microscopic fibers holding your tooth in place are bruised and swollen, turning every chew into a painful impact.
At DayOne, we specialize in the “Biting Mystery.” We don’t guess—we find the mechanical truth.
Our 3D CBCT Solves the Mystery
Traditional 2D X-rays are essentially shadows. If a crack is running front-to-back, a 2D scan will miss it 100% of the time. This is why many patients are told “everything looks fine” even though they are in agony.
We utilize High-Definition 3D CBCT imaging. This technology allows Dr. Bergquist to rotate your tooth in 360 degrees, slicing through the digital image to see the “unseen.”
- See the Invisible: We find the microscopic vertical fractures that 2D scans hide.
- Map the Infection: We see exactly how far an abscess has spread into the surrounding tissue.
- Precise Diagnosis: We identify if the pain is coming from the tooth, the bone, or the sinus cavity.
“Tooth sore when biting? See the tooth in 3D. Decide the best fix. Same-day treatment.”
25+ Years of Dental Expertise
When your pain is complex, you need an authority. In Winter Park, that is Dr. Bergquist. With over a quarter-century of surgical experience, he has seen every variation of the “biting zing.”
DayOne is not a high-volume general clinic. It is a surgical sanctuary. We have specifically designed our workflow to accommodate patients in crisis. While other offices might schedule you for a “consultation” in two weeks, we reserve time every day for immediate intervention.
We believe that once the mystery is solved, the solution should follow immediately. Whether you need a precision-guided root therapy or an atraumatic extraction, we perform the rescue right here, today.
Case Study: The Hidden Fracture
The Patient’s Crisis
A patient came to us after visiting two other dentists. Both had taken standard X-rays and told the patient the tooth “looked healthy,” yet the patient couldn’t even chew a piece of bread without a sharp, electric shock.
The 3D Revelation: Our CBCT scan showed a hairline vertical fracture extending down the internal wall of the tooth—completely invisible on 2D film. Because we saw the truth, we could provide the correct treatment immediately. The patient was back to eating normally within 24 hours.
You Choose the Path
We believe in transparency. Once we have the 3D data, we sit down with you, show you the screen, and explain your options. You are in the driver’s seat.
Option A: Save & Reinforce
If the fracture or infection hasn’t reached the point of no return, we perform immediate emergency therapy to stabilize the tooth and eliminate the “zing.”
Option B: Strategic Removal
If the tooth is structurally unsound, we perform an atraumatic extraction. We remove the source of the pain so you can begin the journey toward a permanent, pain-free replacement.
Biting Pain FAQ
Why does it only hurt when I release the bite?
This is a classic sign of “Cracked Tooth Syndrome.” The pressure of biting holds the crack together, but the “snap” of releasing the pressure sends a shock directly to the nerve. 3D imaging is the only way to confirm this.
Can antibiotics fix biting pain?
Rarely. If the pain is caused by a mechanical crack, antibiotics will do nothing. If it’s an infection, meds might dull the pain temporarily, but the pressure will return as soon as the prescription ends. You need a physical fix.
Will I need a crown?
Often, biting pain caused by a crack requires a crown to hold the tooth together. However, our first priority is the emergency rescue—stopping the pain and cleaning out any infection.
